Plug Into Your Own Self Advocacy
Plug into your own self advocacy by knowing what a difference you can actually make. In other words, plug into who you are and what you can give to others.
Self advocacy is the ability to speak-up for yourself and the things that are important to you. For instance, it means you are able to ask for what you need and want and then tell others about your thoughts and feelings.
Let’s dive into this a little more by breaking it down into parts.
Self Advocacy In Knowing Yourself
How do you know yourself? It is an ongoing journey of self education and changes all the time. You need to find ways to know what you are thinking and how you react to things. With this in mind, you will become quicker at responding in a meaningful way and get many more things done.
When you know yourself, you become aware of your surroundings, your skill level, your strengths and weaknesses. Hence then you can put them to good use instead of coming up against resistance at every corner.
Self Advocacy in Knowing Your Needs
Knowing what you need comes from the discovery of finding your strengths and weaknesses. In other words, finding the things that will help you understand, will give you the strength to pay it forward to others.
There are three areas worth investigating to determine what you need to improve your skills and/or compensate for your weaknesses: they are interventions, accommodations, and modifications. For instance, communicate with others to see what is needed.
Some might call this the cause and effect relationship. Where one event causes another to happen. The cause produces the effect, so communicate and see what result will come from it. Then learn how to adjust to move forward on your journey.
Self Advocacy in Knowing How To Get What you Want
Knowing how to get what you want, starts with knowing what you need. In this day or age we have rights that help all of us have equal opportunities. So, what is stopping you from knowing everything? Nothing but yourself.
I found that when you research, document everything in a journal or something you come up with, you will start to see the way that is helpful to you, no matter what obstacles come your way.
Understanding your rights and knowing how to clearly communicate with others in a constructive way is just as important as knowing your needs. Hence, getting what you want.
Self education, effective communication, and maintaining a support system are your keys to becoming an effective self advocate for anything you face.
Plug into your own self advocacy and see where it will take you. I bet you will be surprised at what you can accomplish and where you can take yourself in the journey ahead.
